Thursday Evenings at the Henrietta DMV

Thursday is Henrietta’s late day. The office stays open until 6:30 p.m., and because permit tests run until an hour before closing, you can book one as late as 5:30 p.m. Walk-in business such as registrations, renewals and plate transfers can be done until closing. Enforcement transactions are the exception: they end at 3:30 p.m. every day, Thursdays included.

Appointments and Qless Check-In

Monroe County requires appointments for permit tests, REAL ID licenses and IDs, and Enhanced licenses and IDs at all four of its DMVs. Book one through Monroe County’s DMV page or at the office’s kiosk. For everything else, just walk in.

Either way, start at the kiosk: since February 2, 2026, the county has used the Qless system to check in both appointments and walk-ins. Choose which one you are, and Qless texts you when it’s time to head to the counter, along with the documents you may need.

The Move to Frontier Commons

Henrietta’s DMV used to be at 2199 East Henrietta Road, in the Town Centre Plaza. That office closed in May 2022, and the county reopened the branch in June 2022 at Frontier Commons on Jefferson Road, about a mile away, with more space for customers and better access to public transportation. If an old listing or map pin still sends you to East Henrietta Road, head to 1225 Jefferson Road instead.

Registering a Vehicle at the Henrietta DMV

Henrietta registers vehicles and issues plates as walk-in transactions, including Thursday evenings until 6:30 p.m. Monroe County residents pay a county use tax of $10 or $20 with each two-year registration, depending on the vehicle’s weight, but no MCTD fee. Bring proof of ownership, proof of New York insurance, your identification and proof of sales tax, and see our guide to registering a car in New York for the forms and fees.

Driver’s Licenses, REAL ID and Enhanced Licenses

Renewing Your License

You can renew up to one year before and up to two years after your license expires. If you already have a REAL ID or Enhanced license, or you’re keeping a Standard license, you can renew online after passing an eye test with an approved provider. Switching to a REAL ID or Enhanced license, updating your photo or changing your license class takes an office visit.

REAL ID or Enhanced?

Both can be used to board domestic flights and enter federal buildings. An Enhanced license can also be used to cross the U.S. border from Canada, Mexico and some Caribbean countries by land or sea, and it costs $30 more; a REAL ID costs the same as a Standard license.

License Fees

ItemFee
Class D license renewal$64.50
Class D license renewal with MCTD fee$80.50
Enhanced license$30 on top of the regular fee
Replacement license or learner permit$17.50

Monroe County isn’t in the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District (MCTD), so residents pay $64.50 for a Class D renewal.

Before You Go: Payment and Closures

Payment

Monroe County doesn’t list accepted payment methods for counter transactions. Its recorded DMV helpline, (585) 753-1604, answers common questions, and the state DMV’s live line is (518) 486-9786.

Holiday and Temporary Closures

As a county office, the Henrietta DMV follows Monroe County’s holiday schedule. It will be closed for Columbus Day on Monday, October 12, 2026. The county posts temporary closures on its DMV page.

Services You Can Complete Online

Some transactions don’t need a trip to Henrietta at all. On the DMV website, you can:

  • Renew your driver’s license, if you’re eligible and pass an eye test with an approved provider
  • Renew a vehicle registration, before it expires or up to one year after
  • Schedule a road test

You can’t renew a registration online if the vehicle hasn’t been inspected in the past 12 months. Office appointments in Monroe County are booked through the county’s Qless system, not the DMV website.
