Syracuse has two state-run DMV offices: Syracuse, in Western Lights Plaza at 4671 Onondaga Boulevard west of downtown, and North Syracuse, at 5801 East Taft Road north of the city. Both Syracuse DMV offices are open weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., offer the same in-person services and take reservations, which the DMV strongly encourages. Unlike most upstate counties, where the county clerk runs the DMV, Onondaga County’s offices are run by the state.

|---|---|---|---|

Which Syracuse DMV Office Should You Use?
Since both offices keep the same hours and handle the same transactions, the choice comes down to where you’re starting from and which office has the reservation time you want. Drivers on the west side and in the western suburbs usually find Onondaga Boulevard closer, while North Syracuse is handier for the northern suburbs. If one office is booked up, check the other before you settle for a later date.
Services at Syracuse DMV Offices
The DMV lists the same in-person services for both offices:
- Upgrade to a REAL ID or Enhanced license
- Renew a license, permit or ID with a new photo, or without a new photo
- Exchange an out-of-state license
- Take a car or motorcycle permit test
- Restore a revoked or suspended license
- Apply for a restricted or conditional license
- Change the name or other information on a license, permit or ID
- Get a non-driver ID
- Get a CDL after passing a CDL road test
- Register a vehicle and get plates
Road tests aren’t taken at the offices; schedule them online or by calling (518) 402-2100, which is open 24 hours a day.
How to Make a Reservation
- Go to the DMV’s reservation system.
- Choose your transaction and either Syracuse or North Syracuse.
- Pick an open date and time, and complete the DMV’s Document Guide before your visit.
Walk-ins are possible, but when an office has long wait times, only customers with a reservation are let in.
Directions
Syracuse (Onondaga Boulevard)
The DMV’s directions from I-81: take I-81 south to the West Street/Franklin Street exit and follow West Street. Turn right on Fayette Street, left onto Geddes Street, then right onto Onondaga Boulevard. Western Lights Plaza is about a mile ahead on the right. The I-81 viaduct project includes a new interchange at West Street, so check a navigation app for current ramps and detours.
North Syracuse (East Taft Road)
The DMV doesn’t publish written directions for this office, so use a map app or this directions link to plan your route to 5801 East Taft Road.
Hours and Holiday Closures
Both offices are open Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and closed on weekends and state holidays, including Columbus Day on Monday, October 12, 2026. Older listings may show Saturday hours at the Syracuse office, which it offered only as an experiment in 2013, or Monday-to-Thursday hours at North Syracuse; neither is current.
Fees and Payment
Onondaga County isn’t in the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District (MCTD), so residents pay $64.50 for a Class D license renewal, compared with $80.50 in the New York City area. An Enhanced license adds $30, and a REAL ID costs the same as a Standard license. DMV offices accept cash; credit, debit and prepaid cards that don’t need a PIN, including American Express, Discover, Mastercard and Visa; Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay; and personal checks or money orders payable to Commissioner of Motor Vehicles.

Renew Online and Skip the Trip
Many renewals don’t need an office visit. You can renew a license online if you’re eligible and pass an eye test with an approved provider, and renew a registration online up to one year after it expires, as long as the vehicle has been inspected in the past 12 months.
The DMV notes that some AAA branches may offer vision testing for license renewals, but AAA’s full DMV service is offered to members only at ten downstate offices, none of them in Central New York; our guide to AAA DMV services in New York lists them.
