The Only DMV Office in East County

The next closest offices are Poway (about 11 miles), the San Diego office on Normal Street (about 12) and Chula Vista (about 13.5), so El Cajon is the closest for nearly all of East County. Straight-line distances from the center of each community:

  • El Cajon and Santee: about 1.5 miles from El Cajon City Hall and from Santee City Hall, 2 from Winter Gardens and 2.5 from Fletcher Hills.
  • Nearby communities: about 3.5 miles from Lakeside, Granite Hills and Casa de Oro-Mount Helix; 5 from La Mesa, Rancho San Diego and San Diego’s Navajo neighborhood; 5.5 from Spring Valley and Crest; and 6.5 from Lemon Grove, with Normal Street at 7.
  • Back country: about 8.5 miles from Jamul and 11.5 from Alpine. Ramona is closer to Poway, at about 11.5 miles.

What El Cajon Handles and What Goes Elsewhere

  • Licenses and tests: driver’s license, ID card and REAL ID applications, knowledge tests until 4:30 p.m., and behind-the-wheel and motorcycle tests by appointment.
  • Vehicles: title transfers, new and out-of-state registrations, VIN verifications, plates and placards. A private-party purchase owes use tax at the rate for the address where you register it: as of October 2026, 8.25% in El Cajon, 8.5% in La Mesa, 8.75% in Lemon Grove and 7.75% in Santee and unincorporated areas such as Lakeside, Spring Valley and Alpine. Our guide to registering a car in California lists the documents and fees.
  • Skip the line at a kiosk: registration renewals and driver and vehicle records can be done at the office’s self-serve kiosk, online, or at grocery store kiosks open every day, including Ralphs at 2652 Jamacha Road (6:00 a.m.–1:00 a.m.) and Vons at 9643 Mission Gorge Road in Santee (5:00 a.m.–1:00 a.m.).
  • Commercial skills tests: at the Rancho San Diego commercial drive test center, 1530 Hilton Head Road, about 5.5 miles south-southeast and the only CDL test site in San Diego County. Smog checks go to licensed smog check stations.

The DMV’s page also lists the Rancho San Diego Industry Business Center at that address; it serves dealers and other vehicle-industry customers, not the public.
