Centers With Limited Services
- Natick: located at the Mass Pike eastbound service plaza, so you can only reach it from the eastbound turnpike. It handles license and ID renewals and amendments and limited registration transactions, but not out-of-state transfers, new or used vehicle registrations, learner’s permits or road tests.
- Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket: island centers with shorter hours that hold road tests only on certain days.
Closed RMV Office
The Chicopee RMV Service Center, which had been limited to business transactions for dealers and insurance agents, is permanently closed. The nearest service center is Springfield, at 1250 St. James Avenue.
RMV Services at AAA Offices
If you’re an AAA member, 33 AAA offices across Massachusetts can handle many RMV transactions, including license and Mass ID renewals and replacements, registration renewals and replacements, replacement titles, and registration transfers for cars bought from a Massachusetts dealer or a private seller. They can’t issue new plates or handle out-of-state dealer transfers. Visits are by reservation through AAA, up to two weeks ahead. Our guide to AAA RMV services in Massachusetts lists every location.
How to Make a Massachusetts RMV Appointment
Permit, license and ID transactions at a service center always need an appointment. To book:
- Go to Make an appointment on the RMV’s Online Service Center.
- Enter your email address. The RMV emails you a personalized scheduling link, which expires within 24 hours.
- Choose your transaction, a service center and an open time.
Walk-ins are welcome for registration and title transactions, but customers with appointments are served first. If you’re a senior or have a disability and need help booking, call (857) 368-8005.
Driver’s Licenses, REAL ID and Mass ID
Renewing Your License
Most Massachusetts licenses are valid for five years. You can renew up to a year before your license expires, and you can do it online if you’re renewing an existing standard or REAL ID license. You’ll need an in-person appointment if you’re upgrading to REAL ID, hold a limited-term license or don’t have a Social Security number. If your license has been expired for more than two years, you’ll have to retake the learner’s permit exam and road test.
Documents Needed for a REAL ID
Since May 7, 2025, you’ve needed a REAL ID or another accepted document, such as a passport, to board domestic flights. To get a REAL ID, book an in-person appointment at a service center or AAA office and bring original or certified documents showing:
- your lawful presence and date of birth, such as a U.S. passport or certified birth certificate
- your full Social Security number, such as your Social Security card or a W-2
- two proofs of Massachusetts residency with your name and current address (P.O. boxes aren’t accepted)
- each legal name change, such as a marriage certificate, divorce decree or court document
License and ID Fees
A REAL ID costs the same as a standard license when you get it at renewal.
| Item | Fee |
|---|---|
| Class D or Class M license (5 years) | $50 |
| Combined Class D and M license | $65 |
| REAL ID upgrade before your renewal date | $25 |
| Mass ID card | $25 |
| Learner’s permit | $30 |
| Road test | $35 |
| Duplicate license | $25 |
Learner’s Permits and Road Tests
Learner’s permit exams and road tests both take place at RMV service centers by appointment. Most centers that offer road tests schedule them Monday through Friday between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., but availability varies, so check the center’s page before you book.
Registering a Vehicle in Massachusetts
In Massachusetts, registration starts with insurance. A licensed Massachusetts insurance agent sets up your policy and completes, stamps and signs your Application for Registration and Title. You then take it to an RMV service center with the previous owner’s title, or the previous owner’s registration and a bill of sale.
Registration and title transactions accept walk-ins. Vehicles must be titled within 10 days of purchase, and the car must pass inspection within 7 days of being registered. If you bought from a private seller, you’ll also pay 6.25% sales tax on the purchase price or the vehicle’s NADA trade-in value, whichever is higher.
A standard passenger registration costs $60 and lasts two years, and a certificate of title costs $75. Our guide to registering a car in Massachusetts covers dealer purchases, private sales and moving from another state.
