Wayne, NJ MVC on Route 46: Licensing, Vehicle Services, Inspections & Road Tests

The Wayne MVC at 481 Route 46 West is the only Motor Vehicle Commission site that does it all: it’s a licensing center, a vehicle center, a state inspection station, a road test site and a Regional Service Center for suspensions and restorations. The agency is open weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.; inspections, road tests and the Regional Service Center keep their own hours, and most license and vehicle business needs an appointment.

Newer Buildings on the Same Route 46 Site

The MVC moved Wayne’s licensing center, road test site and inspection station into newly built, larger facilities on the same site in October 2020, calling Wayne one of its busiest locations. If an older listing shows different hours or says Wayne doesn’t take credit cards, it’s out of date: the MVC now accepts American Express, Mastercard, Visa and Discover, along with checks, money orders and cash.

Do You Need an Appointment at the Wayne MVC?

For license, vehicle and road test business, yes. First-time licenses and permits, REAL ID, knowledge tests, out-of-state transfers, titles, registrations, plate transactions and road tests are all booked ahead. Inspections don’t need an appointment.

How to Book an Appointment

  1. Open the MVC’s appointment scheduler and choose your appointment type, such as Initial permit, Auto road test, REAL ID or New title or registration.
  2. Pick Wayne from the list of locations, then choose an open date and time.
  3. Enter your contact details and keep the confirmation email. Each person needs their own appointment.

Walk-In Services

You can walk in without an appointment for name and gender marker changes, a probationary license after you pass your road test, disability placards, plate returns, permit validation, red GDL decals and 5-year driver abstracts. Most MVC agencies also have a drop box for returning plates.

Vehicle Inspections at the Wayne MVC

Wayne’s state inspection station is open weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 7:00 a.m. to noon, with no fee and no appointment. Bring a valid driver’s license (the driver must be 17 or older), the vehicle’s registration document (not an online renewal receipt) and a New Jersey insurance card. You can come up to two months before the month your sticker expires.

When Newark’s inspection station closed for good on April 11, 2026, the MVC pointed drivers to Wayne, Secaucus, Rahway and Paramus; you can check current wait times at NJinspections.com or by calling (609) 620-7992. A 1996 or later vehicle with a lit check engine light fails the computer test; our guide to New Jersey car inspection explains what happens next and which vehicles are exempt.

Road Tests at the Wayne MVC

Wayne is one of North Jersey’s road test sites, along with Lodi, Randolph, Newark and Rahway. Book an “Auto road test” appointment after you’ve passed the knowledge and vision tests and have a validated permit; the MVC requires six months of supervised driving if you’re under 21, three months if you’re 21 or older, or 20 days outside the Graduated Driver License program. Tests run weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. When you pass, walk in at the agency for your probationary license. Our NJ MVC appointment guide covers motorcycle, moped and CDL road tests as well.

The Wayne Regional Service Center

Wayne is one of six Regional Service Centers, which handle driver conferences and appeals for suspensions and restorations, plus scheduled reviews such as identity theft claims and identification hearings. Without an appointment, you can get information about your driving record, points and insurance surcharges, resolve court suspensions and pay fees. The center is open weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and is closed on Saturdays, even though the agency is open. For point-system and drunk-driving suspensions, the MVC’s line is (609) 292-7500; it suggests calling Tuesday through Friday, avoiding noon to 2:00 p.m.

Registering a Vehicle at the Wayne MVC

Wayne titles and registers vehicles with a “New title or registration” appointment. Bring the title, your ID, proof of New Jersey insurance and Form BA-49, plus Form OS/SS-UTA for an out-of-state title. Plan on $60 for the title ($85 with a lien), $46.50 to $84 a year to register most passenger cars and 6.625% sales tax on a purchase. An out-of-state vehicle must be inspected within 14 days, and the inspection lanes are on site. Our guide on how to register a car in New Jersey has the full checklist.

Driver’s Licenses and REAL ID

Renewing Your License

Most drivers can renew online, including those renewing a REAL ID, even if their renewal notice says to visit an agency. You must renew in person, by appointment, if you hold a CDL or your visa is expiring. New licenses aren’t printed at the agency; yours arrives by mail in two to four weeks, so keep your receipt until it does. A license that’s been expired for more than three years means starting over as a first-time driver.

Getting a REAL ID

If your license expires within three months, book a renewal appointment and upgrade during that visit; otherwise, book a REAL ID appointment. Bring identity documents worth six points, two proofs of your address and proof of your Social Security number. A REAL ID costs $35, compared with $24 for a standard license.

Before You Go: Payment and Holiday Closures

Accepted Payment Methods

The MVC accepts American Express, Mastercard, Visa and Discover cards, checks, money orders and cash.

Holiday Closures

Like every MVC facility, the Wayne agency closes on state holidays. Expect closures on Columbus Day (Monday, October 12, 2026), Election Day (Tuesday, November 3), Veterans Day (Wednesday, November 11) and Thanksgiving (Thursday, November 26); the MVC announces each one a few days ahead.

Services You Can Complete Online

Some transactions don’t need a trip to Wayne at all. On the MVC’s online services page, you can:

  • Renew a standard or REAL ID license or ID, if you’re eligible
  • Change your address
  • Replace a lost license
  • Renew a vehicle registration or replace a lost one
  • Request your driver history abstract
  • Pay a surcharge or restoration fee

Tips for Visiting the Wayne MVC

  • Match the hours to your errand. The agency, inspection lanes, road tests and Regional Service Center each keep their own schedule.
  • Check inspection wait times first. Wayne is one of the stations the MVC recommended after Newark’s closed.
  • Use Saturdays for agency business. The agency is open until 3:00 p.m., but the Regional Service Center isn’t open at all.
  • Walk in for your probationary license. You don’t need another appointment after passing your road test.
  • Renew online when you can. Most license and registration renewals don’t need a visit.
