Saturdays at the Tonawanda DMV

On May 2, 2026, Erie County made Tonawanda its primary Saturday branch for the Northtowns. Saturday service moved here from the Eastern Hills Mall branch in Williamsville, which now closes on weekends, because Sheridan Plaza has room for 10 to 12 transaction windows instead of eight. The change also added about 25 appointment slots. Saturday hours are 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., so plan to walk in by 1:00 p.m. if you don’t have an appointment.

Appointments and Walk-Ins

Appointments aren’t required in Tonawanda, but demand for them is high, and appointment holders are served first through the DMV Express Lane. Book through Erie County’s online reservation system or by calling (716) 858-8864.

  • Each appointment covers up to three transactions.
  • Permit and CDL tests need their own appointment, separate from other business.
  • Arrive no more than 15 minutes early, with your documents and forms ready, and go to Customer Service.
  • Walk-ins are served as space allows until an hour before closing.

From Northtown Plaza to Sheridan Plaza

This branch opened at Sheridan Plaza on February 29, 2016, when Erie County moved its Northtown Plaza office in Amherst to make way for a Whole Foods supermarket. Older listings may still point to former Tonawanda-area addresses, such as Sheridan Parkside Drive, but 2309 Eggert Road is current. Don’t confuse it with Niagara County’s North Tonawanda DMV at 500 Wheatfield Street, a separate office in a different county.

Registering a Vehicle at the Tonawanda DMV

Tonawanda registers vehicles and issues plates on weekdays and Saturdays, with up to three transactions per appointment. Erie County residents pay a county use tax of $10 or $20 with each two-year registration, depending on the vehicle’s weight, but no MCTD fee. Bring proof of ownership, proof of New York insurance, your identification and proof of sales tax, and see our guide to registering a car in New York for the forms and fees.

Driver’s Licenses, REAL ID and Enhanced Licenses

Renewing Your License

You can renew up to one year before and up to two years after your license expires. If you already have a REAL ID or Enhanced license, or you’re keeping a Standard license, you can renew online after passing an eye test with an approved provider. Switching to a REAL ID or Enhanced license, updating your photo or changing your license class takes an office visit.

REAL ID or Enhanced?

Both can be used to board domestic flights and enter federal buildings. An Enhanced license can also be used to cross the U.S. border from Canada, Mexico and some Caribbean countries by land or sea, and it costs $30 more; a REAL ID costs the same as a Standard license.

License Fees

ItemFee
Class D license renewal$64.50
Class D license renewal with MCTD fee$80.50
Enhanced license$30 on top of the regular fee
Replacement license or learner permit$17.50

Erie County isn’t in the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District (MCTD), so residents pay $64.50 for a Class D renewal.

Before You Go: Holidays, Payment and Questions

The state DMV lists Election Day, Tuesday, November 3, 2026, as the branch’s next holiday closure; it doesn’t list Columbus Day. Erie County doesn’t publish the payment methods its Auto Bureau accepts, so call the Clerk’s Office at (716) 858-8785 if you have questions; TDD users can call 711 or 1-800-662-1220.

Services You Can Complete Online

Some transactions don’t need a trip to Tonawanda at all. On the DMV website, you can:

  • Renew your driver’s license, if you’re eligible and pass an eye test with an approved provider
  • Renew a vehicle registration, before it expires or up to one year after
  • Schedule a road test

You can’t renew a registration online if the vehicle hasn’t been inspected in the past 12 months. Office appointments in Erie County are booked through the county’s reservation system, not the DMV website.
