  • Licenses and tests: driver’s license, ID card and REAL ID applications, knowledge tests until 4:30 p.m., and behind-the-wheel and motorcycle tests by appointment.
  • Vehicles: title transfers, new and out-of-state registrations, VIN verifications, plates and placards. A private-party purchase owes use tax at the rate for the address where you register it: as of October 2026, 8.75% in Palm Desert and 7.75% in Rancho Mirage, Indian Wells and unincorporated areas such as Thousand Palms and Sky Valley. Our guide to registering a car in California lists the documents and fees.
  • Skip the line at a kiosk: registration renewals and driver and vehicle records can be done at the office’s self-serve kiosk, online, or at the nearest grocery store kiosks, both open every day: Ralphs at 49908 Jefferson St. in Indio (5:00 a.m.–1:00 a.m.) and Ralphs at 425 S. Sunrise Way in Palm Springs (6:00 a.m.–1:00 a.m.). DMV business partners in Palm Desert also handle some registration work for their own fee, including Ozzies International Tire & Auto (74894 Lennon Place, Suite E2) and GML Quick Smog Shop (74818 Velie Way), both open 10:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. Monday–Saturday.
  • Elsewhere: mobile driver’s license help at Temecula, about 50 miles west-southwest and the closest office on the DMV’s list of offices that help in person; commercial skills tests at the Fontana commercial drive test center, about 66 miles west-northwest, or the El Centro office, about 82 miles southeast; and smog checks at licensed smog check stations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do snowbirds need to register their car in California?

Not while they’re nonresidents. A car with valid registration from your home state can be driven here until you establish California residency. The DMV’s residency rules count being here on more than a temporary basis for six months or more in a 12-month period, along with steps such as registering to vote, working, claiming the homeowner’s property tax exemption or leasing a home here. Once California registration is due, apply within 20 days to avoid penalties.

Does the Palm Desert DMV have a phone number?

The DMV doesn’t list a direct number for the office. Call DMV customer service at 1-800-777-0133, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; the TTY line is 1-800-368-4327.

Conclusion

Palm Desert is the full-service DMV for the middle of the Coachella Valley, from Rancho Mirage and Thousand Palms to Indian Wells, with a kiosk and motorcycle tests. Check its live wait against Indio’s and Palm Springs’ before you go, book ahead for a drive test, use a kiosk or a local business partner for renewals, and go to Temecula for mobile license help.
