How to Register a Vehicle in Nashua

Registering a vehicle in New Hampshire is a two-part process. You always start with your town or city clerk, who collects the local fees and confirms your residency. The state portion comes second.

Step 1: Start at Nashua City Hall

In Nashua, registrations are handled by the city’s Motor Vehicle Registration office at City Hall. The City of Nashua is a municipal agent for the state, so the office can usually complete the state portion of your registration too, for a small extra fee. That means most Nashua residents can finish the whole process at City Hall without visiting the DMV.

You can also renew a registration online through the city, though online payment covers renewals only. New registrations can’t be done online.

Step 2: Complete the State Portion at the DMV, If Needed

You’ll only need the Nashua DMV for registration if you live in a town whose clerk can’t complete the state portion, or if your transaction is one your clerk can’t handle. In either case, bring the paperwork from your town or city clerk to your DMV appointment.

Driver’s Licenses and REAL ID

Renewing Your Driver’s License

About two months before your license expires, NH DMV mails a renewal notice. The notice tells you whether you can renew online. If you can’t, book an appointment at Nashua or another office.

Documents Needed for a REAL ID

Bring documents that prove:

  • your identity and lawful presence, such as a U.S. passport or a certified birth certificate
  • your Social Security number
  • your New Hampshire residency
  • each legal name change, such as a marriage certificate for each marriage

The state’s REAL ID site has an online document checker that tells you exactly what to bring.

REAL ID driver license$60
Non-driver ID card$10

Knowledge and Road Tests

NH DMV gives knowledge and road tests by appointment only, and road test availability varies between offices. Request a test through the DMV’s appointment system, and check other offices if Nashua has no openings.

For a road test, bring:

  • a vehicle of the right class for your license that’s fully registered, in safe condition and inspected if required
  • a properly licensed driver who drives you to and from the test site and stays until your test is finished

Before You Go: Payment and Holiday Closures

Accepted Payment Methods

NH DMV offices accept:

  • Visa, MasterCard and Discover cards, plus American Express in person or by phone
  • Cash, in person only
  • Personal checks, money orders and traveler’s checks made payable to “State of NH – DMV”

Nashua City Hall sets its own payment options for registrations, so check with the Motor Vehicle Registration office before you go.

Holiday Closures

NH DMV offices close on New Hampshire’s paid state holidays:

  • New Year’s Day
  • Martin Luther King Jr./Civil Rights Day
  • Presidents’ Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day
  • Veterans Day
  • Thanksgiving Day and the day after
  • Christmas Day

When a holiday falls on a weekend, the state may observe it on a nearby weekday instead.

You can skip the trip for several transactions on the NH DMV website:

  • Renew your driver’s license or non-driver ID, if your renewal notice says you’re eligible
  • Order a duplicate license or ID
  • Pay a ticket or plead not guilty

Nashua residents can also renew their registrations online through the city.
